How can counselling help?

Counselling provides a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space whereby you are able to voice whatever you feel is important. A counsellor is separate from the rest of the people in your life, sharing with them allows you to find out and test your feelings, explore them before you take whatever it is into your life, without judgement. It gives you a chance to vent about a certain experience or life in general. You can plan, explore, share, hide, test, understand. Through these experiences it enables you to develop coping mechanisms to take and use within your life outside counselling. It gives you back control over your life; your thoughts and feelings. It helps you to regulate your emotions.

My Approach

My approach to Counselling clients on the Autistic Spectrum

Over the years I have learnt an enormous amount from each person I have had the privilege of working with which has informed and helped shaped my work. Some clients come from having been supported within in a clinical environment; having to fit within a category, or are part of a larger support network whereby they feel what they share isn’t always confidential.

There are many common traits that are apparent within Autism however I have come to find that the spectrum is so broad, more of a landscape than a line that each person I meet is completely unique; they do not fit into generalised boxes, and just one way of working may not cut it. I have met people who respond better to a solution focused approach where others need a place whereby they can safely share what they need to without feeling directed. I am as comfortable listening as I am using a whiteboard and actively participating in your session if is what is needed.

I start from a blank canvas so to speak and intuitively work alongside each client, which reveals their unique way of seeing the world. It is from there that together we are able to find the best way forward. I work in a transparent way, explaining my thinking clearly alongside being open to your questions about your sessions. One thing I encourage is being yourself; being able to ask questions, to speak without having to filter what you say. (‘Is this socially appropriate?) I do not see myself as the’ expert’ in knowing you rather someone with many years of experience in working with a variety of different issues, someone who has extensively researched Autism, alongside first- hand family experience. Most importantly I see Autism as different to a nuerotypical mind rather than it being a disordered mind.

If you are interested in finding out more about counselling, which may mean you have a lot of questions please feel free to write your questions in an email, or send a request for a telephone call whichever works best for you.

Skype Sessions

If it is not practical for you to attend my practice I work via Skype. Many clients on the spectrum prefer this method as it can allow you to be in the comfort of your own home. It also can take away some of the intensity of sitting with another person in a room. Another benefit of Skype is that often the camera is positioned in such a way that it makes it easy to not have to have direct eye contact.
Skype session fees are £35 per hour. The session fee is to be paid 48 hours before your session via internet banking.

Cancellation:
I ask for 24 hours’ notice of a cancellation. Less than 24 hours’ notice sessions will be charged at the full rate.
If you need to move your session within the same week I will do my best to re-schedule your session as long as you have made contact within the 24 hours’ notice period. If I do not have any sessions left available that week, I will offer you the next available time.

Assessment session:
At the beginning of counselling I offer an assessment session. This first session gives you the opportunity to see how it feels working alongside me, to share a little of what brings you to counselling.
It also gives me the opportunity to see if the way I work will be of most benefit to you. We can also discuss what counselling will entail and what we can work towards. We can discuss this at the end of the assessment session or via email after if that is more comfortable for you.
